Women now hold more than 80% of household financial decisions and make 70% of the healthcare-related choices in their families. Even so, the women's healthcare market faces an uphill battle after centuries of neglect and limited access to these services.
Education and discussion around women's healthcare is growing, but technology serving women is still an emerging industry. For example, just 3% of the 2,728 US digital health deals since 2011 focused on women's health. The newness of the market creates many opportunities for individuals and organizations that are and will be participating in this field. Below are three important Femtech trends to pay attention to so that businesses can proactively pioneer in providing technology solutions to serve women:
AI and machine learning
With more data on women's health, AI and machine learning will continue to emerge as a dominant force, from improving sleep patterns to optimizing fertility treatments. Using digital tools to track your health is nothing new. However, AI and machine learning can analyze this data to provide personalized recommendations and interventions, yielding significant improvements in women's health outcomes. Technology companies need to prioritize user privacy by ensuring secure data collection and handling practices.
Active menopause
A woman must go through menopause regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or education level. Unfortunately, 45% of women don't know the difference between perimenopause and menopause before experiencing symptoms. Even though the menopause market has about $600 billion in spending opportunities, only 7% of women's tech startups address this stage of women's lives.
Many emerging companies are entering the menopause space, offering solutions like menopause-focused intimacy products and vaginal care products that can help alleviate symptoms and improve overall well-being during menopause. We can expect similar products or even more advanced technologies to address the various challenges women face during menopause.
Solution for breast cancer patients
Unlike some cancers linked to infections, such as HPV and cervical cancer, no viral or bacterial infections have been linked to breast cancer. Early detection and diagnosis are crucial for successful treatment.
Three pioneering companies are addressing breast cancer treatment methods: Gabbi, RNA Nanotherapeutics, and Vara. Notably, these companies have female founders. Their technologies focus on early detection and treatment, making the disease easier to control and less complicated. These advancements include AI and machine learning for analysis, RNA nanotechnology for targeted therapies, TACC3 inhibitors to prevent cancer cell growth, and liquid biopsies for less invasive diagnosis.
In the future, health technology is expected to receive significant investment, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of health and wellness. Femtech will undoubtedly benefit from this trend. However, the sector will need to develop more solutions beyond those currently available to meet the diverse health needs of billions of women around the world.
